Composition of Two Buildings – Sensitive Renovation and Extension of the Former Hospital and a Lightweight New Build Pavilion in an Expansive Garden.
The conversion of the former children’s hospital into urban housing is approached through sensitive external interventions on the building’s architecture. Lightweight balcony structures and roof additions with contemporary dormers are added, all aimed at improving the living conditions for the proposed apartments. Interior interventions are more substantial — the corridor system of the former hospital is transformed into a stair-access apartment building, with two cores serving a total of 24 units.
The new building — a lightweight wooden pavilion — is located within the garden at the northwest corner of the site. Its geometry and position respond to the surrounding development. The building mass, harmoniously placed into the sloping terrain, is conceptually based on a split-level system. Thanks to the layout and subtle façade proportions, it appears appropriately scaled and welcoming. The 28-unit floor plan is based on a principle of corner orientation towards the surrounding greenery, creating a soft interface between interior and exterior: interior — loggia/balcony — exterior.
The landscaping concept refers to garden designs of the first half of the 20th century. The forecourts of the buildings are conceived as semi-public spaces accessible to the wider public.
